A desert escape in Liwa: staying at Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa

Private pool villas, endless dunes and a sunset buggy ride: why this desert resort in Liwa has become my yearly escape from Abu Dhabi.

Imagine waking up surrounded by endless golden dunes, spending the day by your own private pool and watching the sunset over the desert. And what about a buggy ride through the dunes?

If you're looking for the perfect desert escape less than three hours from Abu Dhabi, this is one of my favourite places to go.

It's the perfect place to disconnect for a weekend, without even leaving the Abu Dhabi emirate.

It's literally become my yearly must-do escape, one I wouldn't want to miss. And because I love this place so much, I felt like sharing it with you.

What is Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa?

Bab Al Nojoum Bateen Liwa is a desert resort in the Liwa region, on the edge of the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali), the largest continuous sand desert in the world. Unlike a typical city hotel, it offers private villas surrounded by dunes, giving you the space to slow down and enjoy a different side of the UAE.

It's a great option for couples looking for a quiet getaway, as well as families wanting to spend time together away from the city.

Staying in a private villa

One of the things that makes this resort special is the private outdoor space that comes with each villa: a terrace overlooking the dunes, your own plunge pool and even a firepit.

There are one, two and three-bedroom villas, as well as a Royal Villa for larger groups. Whether you're planning a romantic escape or a family stay, the idea is the same: enjoy the desert at your own pace.

Where to eat at the resort

You don't have to leave the resort to find something to eat. There are several options, from the main restaurant, 28 Degrees, to The Oasis Pool Side and the Lobby Café.

But my favourite option? Having mixed grills and fresh salads delivered straight to the villa, so you can enjoy dinner by your own pool. A delicious meal, complete privacy and the dunes all around you. What more could you ask for?

What to do in Liwa

Part of the appeal of staying here is that you don't need a packed itinerary. You can walk straight out from your villa and explore the dunes, taking in the views and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

And if you're up for something a little more adventurous, a buggy ride through the dunes at sunset is a must.

If you want to explore beyond the resort, the wider Liwa region is worth discovering too. You can visit Tal Moreeb, one of the highest dunes in the UAE, see the date and camel farms around the oasis villages, or explore the area's historic desert forts. During winter, the Liwa International Festival is another reason to plan a visit.

How to get to Liwa from Abu Dhabi

Liwa is around 250 km from Abu Dhabi city, so expect approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by car, depending on your starting point.

The drive itself is usually peaceful, with long stretches of open road and beautiful desert scenery. I'd recommend arriving before dark, especially if it's your first time driving there.

When is the best time to visit Liwa?

The cooler months, generally November to March, are the most comfortable for spending time outdoors and exploring the dunes.

Summer temperatures can make outdoor activities challenging, but you can still enjoy your private pool, especially towards sunset when the light over the dunes is beautiful.
